The Porsche 904 GTS (Gran Turismo Sport) was built in 1963, on the basis of a production car, to take part in the FIA-GT races. In November the aircraft manufacturer Heinkel in Speyer, Bavaria, started to build the 116 stylish bodies made of synthetic materials, so that Porsche very quickly would have the necessary quantity of 100 examples ready for GT class registration. Some of these cars were converted into racing cars, such as the 904 starting at no. 54, driven by George Follmer and Peter Gregg, who took overall 7th place in the 12-hour race at Sebring in 1966 and decisively won the GT under two liters class. The 904 GTS is still regarded as one of the most successful and, above all, one of the most handsome racing cars of the early 60s.
